Reach

The best work in the room is not always the most seen. Reach is what closes that gap, on purpose.

Your work is strong. The problem is how far it travels. Reach is distribution: the skill of making sure the people who should know what you can do actually do. It is not luck, and it is not self-promotion. It is a system you build.

In AI, the stakes are sharper than usual. Your best work is often absorbed straight into a model or a launch with no clear attribution to you, and external visibility is strangely hard in a field moving this fast, because the cycle rewards hot takes over durable reads. When attribution falls back on memory and on whoever happens to be narrating, the person who distributed their thinking wins, even when someone else did the better work. That dynamic is worth reading in Some Work Carries a Name. Most Doesn’t.

What reach in AI actually is, and what it is not

Reach is distribution treated as a skill. It is the deliberate practice of getting your work in front of the people whose picture of you matters. It is the difference between doing excellent work and being known for doing excellent work.

It is not volume. Posting constantly is activity, not reach. One idea that travels beats ten that do not.

It is not being loud. Reach is about being seen by the right people, which is a targeting problem, not a volume problem.

It is not luck or charisma. It is a repeatable channel, built and maintained on purpose.

Why good work stays invisible

There is a version of you that exists in other people’s heads, and it is built entirely from what they have seen. If your best thinking lives in internal docs, private threads, and meetings three people attended, that version is smaller than the real one. The gap between the two is the reach gap, and it is where opportunities quietly go to more visible peers whose work is not as good as yours.

The comforting belief is that quality is self-evident: do work good enough, for long enough, and it will be noticed. This is the most expensive assumption in the reach dimension, because it justifies doing nothing about distribution while more visible people accrue the opportunities. Most technically strong people were never taught that distribution is a discipline, so they assume good work markets itself. It does not. This is not about performing for attention. It is about closing the distance between what you can do and what the right people know you can do.

Five signs your work is not reaching

  • People one level out cannot describe what you do.
  • Your best thinking lives where no one outside can see it.
  • You produce a lot and distribute almost none of it.
  • Opportunities go to more visible peers with weaker work.
  • You start channels and abandon them.

What actually builds reach

Reach is the compounding result of distribution done as a practice. It is built from three things.

A channel, chosen and kept. Reach comes from one channel worked consistently, not from being everywhere occasionally. The channel compounds only if you stay long enough for it to.

Repetition of a small number of ideas. You do not need endless new content. You need your best few ideas to travel across many surfaces. Reach rewards the person who says the true thing repeatedly.

Targeting. Being seen by the right hundred people beats being seen by the wrong ten thousand. Reach is a targeting discipline before it is a volume one.

How to build reach in AI: four moves

Treat distribution as a skill

The work is half the job. Getting it in front of the right people is the other half. After every meaningful piece of work, ask one question: who else should see this, and where do they already look? Then put it there. That single habit, done routinely, is most of distribution.

Pick one channel and compound it

Choose one channel where your future sponsors and peers already are, and commit to a cadence you can hold, weekly or biweekly, for a full quarter before you judge it. Compounding needs time. Five half-built channels reach no one. One well-kept channel becomes an asset.

Repackage one idea, do not manufacture ten

Distribution does not require a content factory. Take one strong idea and give it more surfaces: the post, the short talk, the internal memo, the comment on someone else’s work. One idea, five surfaces. You are not repeating yourself, you are covering the room.

Show your work where the right people already are

Map where the people who could sponsor, hire, or cite you already spend attention, and put your best reasoning there. Distribution aimed at the right hundred people does more than broadcast aimed at everyone.

The visibility myth, examined

The reach mistake worth its own section is the belief that visibility equals volume, and that reach is therefore either exhausting or beneath you. Both keep strong people quiet. Reach feels like it should require constant output, so you either burn out attempting it or reject it as self-promotion and opt out. Both responses hand the ground to people who understood that reach is a targeting and consistency problem, not a volume or ego one. The person with the most reach in your field is rarely the loudest. She is the most consistent, on the right channel, with a small number of ideas worth repeating.

Reach versus authority: what is the difference?

They are easy to confuse and they are not the same. Authority is whether your expertise is recognized as expertise. Reach is whether your work is seen at all. You need both, and the most common trap for technically excellent women is strong authority with weak reach: the judgment is real, and it never leaves the room. If your work is seen but not read as authoritative, start with Authority. If it is authoritative but unseen, you are in the right place.

Frequently asked questions

What does reach mean in a career context?

Reach is distribution: how far your work travels beyond the people immediately around you. It is a skill you build, distinct from the quality of the work itself, and it determines how many of the right people know what you are capable of.

Why does my good work go unnoticed?

Because quality is not self-evident and distribution is a separate discipline. People act on the version of you they can see, and if your best work lives in internal docs and small meetings, that version is far smaller than the real one. The fix is deliberate distribution, not better work.

Isn’t building reach just self-promotion?

No. Self-promotion is talking about yourself. Reach is getting your actual work and thinking in front of the right people, reliably. It is a targeting problem, not a volume or ego one, and the people with the most reach are usually the most consistent, not the loudest.

How do I get credit for my work in AI?

Create public, citable artifacts with your name attached rather than relying on internal work that gets absorbed without attribution. When your thinking is on the record and distributed, credit stops depending on who happens to be narrating.

Should I build one channel or be everywhere?

One channel, worked consistently, beats five done occasionally. Reach compounds only with time on a single channel where the right people already are.
